It is usually the first marketing question a business owner asks us: should we spend on SEO or on Google Ads? Both put you in front of people searching on Google. But they work very differently, cost very differently, and fail in very different ways. Choosing the wrong one first is an expensive way to learn.
Here is the honest comparison we give our own clients — with Indian costs, real timelines, and a simple rule at the end.
How each one works
Google Ads is rent. You pay for every click, your ad appears at the top of Google today, and the moment you stop paying, you disappear completely. Nothing remains — no rankings, no asset, nothing.
SEO is ownership. You invest in your website — its content, speed, structure and reputation — and Google rewards you with free clicks that keep coming month after month. It builds slowly, but what you build stays yours.
The honest comparison
| Google Ads | SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| First results | Same day | 6–12 weeks to movement, 3–6 months to real results |
| Cost style | Pay per click — in India, roughly ₹20–₹300+ per click depending on your market | Fixed monthly work — no per-click cost, ever |
| When you stop paying | Everything stops, instantly | Rankings and traffic continue for months |
| Trust | Many users skip ads on habit | Organic results feel earned — and usually convert better |
| Control | Total — pause, target a city, change the message today | Slower to steer — Google decides rankings, not you |
| Best for | Launches, offers, events, testing a new market | Steady enquiry flow and long-term growth |
What each really costs in India
A sensible Google Ads test budget for a local or B2B business is ₹15,000–₹30,000 a month — below that, the data is too thin to learn anything. In competitive markets (real estate, education, finance), a single click can cost ₹200–₹500, so budgets climb fast.
SEO is usually a fixed monthly engagement. The real cost of SEO is not the fee — it is patience. For the first two or three months you are building a foundation that has not paid you back yet. Businesses that quit at week eight conclude "SEO doesn't work". Businesses that reach month six rarely go back to ads-only.
The simple rule: which one first?
Choose ads first if you need enquiries this month, you are launching something new, or you want to test which services and cities actually convert before investing in them. Ads are also the fastest way to learn what your customers really search for — knowledge that makes your later SEO far sharper.
Choose SEO first if your business will still exist in two years (it will), your customers research before buying, and you are tired of paying for every single click. If you serve a local area, start even narrower with local SEO — Maps rankings often move faster than full website rankings and bring calls quickly.
Choose both, in sequence, if you can. This is what we recommend most often: run a focused ads campaign for the first 60–90 days to bring enquiries and data, while SEO builds underneath. Then, as organic enquiries grow, reduce the ad budget to only your highest-value campaigns. Your cost per enquiry falls every quarter instead of rising.
The mistake to avoid
The most expensive pattern we see is a business running ads to a weak website. The clicks are paid for, the page loads slowly or explains nothing, and the visitor leaves in five seconds. Before scaling ads, make sure the page people land on is fast, clear and trustworthy — even a modest professionally managed campaign cannot rescue a page that does not convert. And before starting SEO, make sure your website is technically sound; our SEO team always begins with an audit for exactly this reason.
Our honest answer
If you forced us to pick only one for a typical Indian small business with a limited budget: start with a small, tightly-targeted ads test to learn what converts, and start SEO in parallel as early as you can afford. Ads buy you information and immediate enquiries. SEO buys you freedom from paying for every click, forever.
Not sure which fits your business? Tell us about your project — we will look at your market and give you a straight answer, including if the right answer is "spend nothing yet".
Questions people ask us
Can SEO replace Google Ads completely?
For many established businesses, mostly yes — organic traffic carries the steady flow, and ads return only for launches and offers. But SEO can never be switched on for a single weekend sale. The two tools do different jobs.
How much should a small business budget for SEO vs ads?
A common healthy split in the first year is roughly equal: a ₹15,000–₹30,000 ads test budget alongside a fixed SEO engagement. As organic results grow, shift the balance towards SEO — many of our clients end up spending 70% on SEO and content, 30% on their best ads.
We tried ads before and lost money. Is SEO safer?
Ads usually lose money for fixable reasons: broad targeting, one campaign for everything, or a landing page that does not convert. SEO is slower but more forgiving — its results compound instead of evaporating. Either way, fix the website first.
